Automata & Mechanical Toys

£24.99

Product description

This claims to be "the first book to deal with the evolution of mechanical toys following on the history of automata from very early times." The history begins with the discovery of little figurines with movable limbs in Egyptian tombs of 2000 B.C., some of which were made to perform by the action of a lever. The author finishes by considering the increasing interest in collections of Dinky toys and Space toys, which by 1976 (the date of publication) were becoming of interest to antique dealers and collectors.

Mary Hillier is/was a known authority on the subject of antique toys, and a contributor to both the Encyclopaedia Americana and the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Other titles by her include 'Pageant of Toys' (1965) and 'Dolls and Dollmakers' (1968).

Our copy is in excellent condition, the illustrated dust jacket (unclipped) protected by an outer mylar cover, and the book itself showing no signs of wear or use. It is bound in black cloth with the title etc in silver lettering on the spine. Inside, apart from some very slight browning of the page edges, the binding is firm and all pages clean and bright. Of particular interest is the ex libris opposite the halftitle page, which proclaims the owner to be Bevis Hillier (the author's son), and the title page is enhanced with the author's signature - making this perhaps the only signed copy currently available. The fascinating text is enhanced by myriad photographs (both colour and B/W). A must for the collector of automata or mechanical toys.
