An attractively produced booklet which is number 2 of a series published by the North Pennines Heritage Trust. The author starts with the background and history of bastles (defensible farmhouses) and continues with a description of form and construction. The second half of the book describes three itineraries which can be followed, in Allendale, West Allendale, and Alston and the South Tyne Valley, to visit a number of the remaining bastle houses and other defensible buildings. The card covers have some slight general handling marks and a few light brown waterstains; bound with two clean staples. Includes line drawings, maps of the itineraries and 8 colour photographs.
