The book has navy blue cloth-covered boards and spine with the book's title and the author's and publisher's names in gilt lettering on the spine. The corners show very little bumping and there is virtually no shelf wear except for some mild wear on the bottom edges of the boards. The fixed endpapers are well-glued to the boards and the free endpapers are well-stitched to the spine. The pages are well-cut and show no discolouration. The pages include three batches of colour and black and white photographs. At the beginning of the book are four drawn maps and ten pages of family trees. The book is signed on the title page by the author, John Julius Norwich, with a dedication to "Robert and Chrissie King". The dust jacket is in very good condition with virtually no wear. The cover shows a painting of Emperor John VIII Palaeologus. The jacket is not price-clipped.
