"Chinthe Tales is a collection of reminiscences by people who had ties with The Burmah Oil Company - either as employees or as family of employees. The tales cover a time span of some fifty years - from the 1920s to the 1970s and are mostly set in Burma, India, Pakistan, Ecuador and Peru. They are personal stories but, as a whole, they present a picture of a rather special way of life. They show how people of different nationalities and backgrounds, who went to work in remote places for long periods of time, were able to make the best of a difficult, uncomfortable - and sometimes hostile - environment. There is humour, nostalgia, danger and excitement in these stories but, most of all, there is a sense of the sheer enjoyment of life."
