The full title of the book (originally published in 1853) is "Discoveries in the Ruins of Nineveh and Babylon: With Travels in Armenia, Kurdistan and the Desert: Being the Result of a Second Expedition Undertaken for the Trustees of the British Museum." A.H. Layard’s discovery of the Assyrian citadel Nineveh was momentous. In his introduction, Andrew George, Professor of Babylonian and Assyrian at the University of London, applauds Layard’s adventurous spirit. This edition displays his celebrated pictures of the site, done in situ. There are 27 colour plates including the frontispiece, plus numerous drawings and illustrated end papers. This attractively produced edition by the Folio Society (without a slip-case) is in fine nearly new condition, with colourful buckram-covered boards. A substantial heavy book.
