Dorset and the second legion

£17.99

Product description

How long did the Roman army, in the form of the Second Legion of Augusta, Campaign in Dorset? What was the extent of its activity in terms of the forts and roads? For a long time it was the thought that the Roman military presence in Dorset was brief and superficial, but the discovery in the 1960s of the Roman invasion fortress at Lake Farm, near Wimborne, possibly established by the future emperor Vespiasian as a base for the Second Legion, forced a reconsideration. Here Norman Field, the original identifier of the Lake site, gives his own account of its discovery, and how subsequent excavation and survey established its importance. He then goes on to describe in detail the unsuspected network of military roads, radiating from the Lake, that was laid out in Dorset during those early years of the conquest.
