Dupleix and Clive The Beginning of Empire

£14.99

Product description

This hardcover book is in fair condition overall. The cover of the book has a gilded title on the spine. The title also appears to have been on the front cover, but it has now faded almost entirely. While the cover does have minor markings throughout, it is mostly worn on the edges and corners, and there is a small tear along the binding. The pages of the book are discoloured overall, though the inside of the pages are less discoloured than the edges. There are sections of pages which have issues with foxing, though it is not an issue throughout the entire book. The book is a first edition published in 1920.

'It is not my purpose in the following pages to attempt writing in the personal history of the two great though essentially different men whose names I have placed upon my title-page, but rather to sketch the history of the ideas and conditions which under their impulse resulted in the establishment of the English Company as the principal power in India, and to trace out the obligations of the English to the French. Those obligations have commonly been minimised by the historians of the first, and exaggerated by the historians of the second nation.'
