£80.00

Product description

Both books are reprints published in 1999 by Sandpiper Books (Oxford at the Clarendon Press). Originally published in 1969 & 1971.

1. Historical Development. 218 pages. E W Marsden presents a comprehensive account of the development and historical employment of ancient artillery from its invention in 399 BC to the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West (AD 400). Among the many topics raised are the influence of artillery's introduction on warfare, its organisation by states and monarchs, obtaining and training, and the effects of artillery on fortifications. The work is based on translated Greek and Latin texts describing the construction of catapults, ballistae and other machines.

2. Technical Treatises. 277 pages. Contains five principal treatises which can be regarded as a unique group in the field of ancient applied mechanics.
E W Marsden uses these to trace in considerable detail mechanical progress in the construction of Greek and Roman artillery over a period of five centuries.

Both volumes include foot notes and diagrams within the text, together with extensive appendices, index and photographic plates are the back of the books.

The two books are both in excellent condition, with unclipped dust jackets, pristine pages and tight binding. Light finger marks on glossy DJs.
