Heronsgate: Freedom, Happiness and Contentment - The First 150 Years of the Estate

£24.99

Product description

"Written to celebrate the sesquicentennial of this, the first Chartist estate, this is the first account of the origins and growth of a unique community. Using information gathered from many different sources including contributions from two leading authorities on Chartism, the author gives an account of the first settlers who moved to Heronsgate from the industrial centres of England in 1847. He debates the downfall of the Chartist Land Company, the subsequent acquisition of the Estate rents by the Chartist solicitor William Prowting Roberts and the transition from a settlement of smallholders to the present day. The opening chapters discussing Feargus O'Connor and the Chartist ideology are followed by chapters on the history and development of the Estate, the houses and their occupants, the places of worship, the schools and the post offices. It considers the impact of the M25 motorway and the designation of Heronsgate as a conservation area. The final chapters include a series of anecdotes and recollections by past and present Heronsgate residents. With over 220 pages of well-researched information, 40 black and white illustrations and eight pages of coloured illustrations and maps, it is a necessary addition to the library of anyone interested in this fascinating period of English social history."
