HMS Eagle 1942-1978

£54.99

Product description

"Neil McCart has become the "keeper of the flame" by publishing via his own Company, well written and illustrated works on Royal Navy ships, particularly it's aircraft carrier's.
Unlike Ark Royal, her better known sister ship thanks to the Sailor TV Series, Eagle saw action during the Suez crisis. After her 1959 to 1964 refit she became the RN's most powerful carrier. Eagle was taken out of service by the Conservative Government in 1971. Ark Royal ran on to 1978 but most opinion was that she was inferior to Eagle both in terms of her electronics fit and hull condition. However, funds to fully refit Eagle for Phantoms were not made available and she was left to rust at Devonport being stripped in the meantime to keep Ark going. When the Ark was retired Eagle was quietly sent to the scrapyard.
Neil does not dwell on the sad end of this fine ship but highlights her global service with the Roayal Navy. She carried aircraft that changed from the piston engined Firebrands and Sea Hornets of the early 1950's to the unrivalled Buccaneer S2s but all flew from the Navy's finest fixed wing carrier, a happy ship to the end. This book is a long overdue tribute to HMS Eagle her crew and all who flew from her."

Book in very good condition with clean pages throughout and securely bound. Printed in 1996.
