Northumberland - England's Farthest North

£4.99

Product description

This guide to the English County of Northumberland was first printed in 1952. This is the Special Coronation edition printed in 1953. It has a printed inscription in the front: "This Book is presented to you by the Education Committee of the County of Northumberland as a memento of the Coronation of Her majesty Queen Elizabeth II and a reminder of your loyalty to Her Majesty and the to the beautiful County of Northumberland" Chairman of the County Education Committee.

The book describes towns and villages of the County in alphabetical order. For example the entry for Holy Island begins:
"For centuries called Lindisfarne, this island of holy memory lies a mile or so off the Northumberland coast, but except at high tide can be reached on foot from the mainland. Here is sacred ground, the cradle of Christianity in Northumbria, hallowed by its links with St Aidan and St Cuthbert."

This is a blue hardback book with faded gold lettering on the spine and a coat of arms on the front cover. The cover is in good condition, with a few marks and stains, and some wear at the edges and corners.

Book pages are in good condition with some ageing. There are black and white photographs included of some of the places of interest.
