Paideia The Ideals of Greek Culture 3 vols

£39.99

Product description

Werner Jaeger was a noted classicist, who fled Nazi Germany and continued his very distinguished career in the US. Paedeia is a term for the ancient Greek syllabus for the creation of a rounded and civilised man. This book was translated by Gilbert Highet. It consists of four books, the first two being bound as one. The titles are Archaic Greece (222 pages)/The Mind of Athens(187 pages)/In Search of the Divine Centre(442 pages)/ The Conflict of Cultural Ideals in the Age of Plato( 374 pages).

Blackwell three volume set. Volumes II and III are in good condition with unclipped DJs, good binding and no marks. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for Vol 1.where there is severe damp damage to the lower margin and the lower edge of the DJ has been extensively destroyed by insect infestation. This DJ has been clipped. There is extensive adherent material on the underlying boards both front and back. Despite this very considerable aesthetic damage, the underlying text block is eminently readable having suffered only slight damp damage to the lower margin of the first 100 pages. The other detriment is that this three volume set is heavy and will, unfortunately, incur some additional postage costs.

Two otf of three very good; one of the three frankly distasteful.
