This dictionary presents the origins and meanings of more than 2,000 placenames in Russia and the coutries of the former Soviet Union; that is of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. Also included are the names of major natural areas with territory which was formerly a part of the USSR, such as the Baltic Sea, the Bering Sea, the Black Sea, and the Caspian Sea. Each entry is cross-referenced, and has 4 principle components : the name itself, its Cyrillic equivalent, a brief description of the named place and sometimes its historical/cultural origins, the meaning of the name.
The beginning of the book introduces the reader to the languages and nationalities of Russia/the former USSR, patterns of naming, post-Communist names and more. A Cyrillic to Roman Index if to be found at the end of the book.
BOOK CONDITION : Good overall : ex-library with the word "discarded" stamped at title page, and an unused issue ticket at the back of the book; mild bumping and denting; slight shelfwear along edges of covers; minor marking around lower edge where former library label; otherwise covers presentable and all titling intact; mild toning to inside pages; minor ripple like effect to far top right hand corners of first 20 or so pages; otherwise inside pages in very good condition; binding strong and secure.
