Poems by Speranza

Product description

Jane Elgee submitted poems anonymously to the Irish journal the National from 1846 until the journal was shut down by the authorities. Her pseudonym was preserved when the poems were quoted in the court case of the editor for treason. It is said that she stood up in the court and claimed authorship. Although from Conservative and Anglican stock she came to sympathise with the Nationalist cause. She married Sir Wilde and was the mother of three children. A hostess of reputation during her later life in London she had to admit that initially people came to her soirees to see her but that, with the passage of time she was known merely as the mother of Oscar.

Cameron and Ferguson 1870 third edition. With green card covers. The front cover is totally detached. Both front and back covers are grubby with edge wear. The text block is similarly grubby. and the spine cover blackened. Despite these manifest defects, the text block is intact and well bound. There are a few pencil lines and annotations but I have found no more permanent marks.
