Twice revised since publication, its literate style and chronological arrangement make it accessible to both the specialist and the non-specialist. Though he is primarily concerned with a detailed analysis of the long developmnent of Roman coinage, the author puts the subject in perspective by providing some account of other coinage with which Rome came into close contact.
The general plan of the original edition has been retained, and the book is divided into three main parts; the Republic, the Early Empire from Augustus to Diocletian and the Late Empire from Diocletian to Romulus Augustus.
