The Civilisation of the Period of the Renaissance in Italy by Jacob Burckhardt, translated by S. G. C. Middlemore

£9.99

Product description

This is the first volume of the first English edition of Burckhardt’s famous work on the Italian Renaissance, originally published in German in 1860. Burckhardt’s book had a huge impact in the 19th Century and remains one of the most influential studies of the Italian Renaissance and a classic of historical writing. Burckhardt was a pioneer of cultural history, but his first section was titled "The State as a Work of Art". Burckhardt saw the source of the Italian Renaissance in politics, for in the Middle Ages, while France and Britain centralised their monarchies, Italy became a collection of competing independent states. The second section of his book is called "The Development of the Individual" and portrays the typical Italian Renaissance man as "the first-born among the sons of modern Europe". Burckhardt argued that the self-conscious individualism of modern culture had its origins in the Italian Renaissance. The judgements made by Burckhardt are still relevant today and any serious study of the historiography of the Italian Renaissance should start with his book.
This is volume one only, containing the ten chapters of Part 1, four chapters of Part 2 and eleven chapters of Part 3.

Used – Good condition. Bound in brown boards with gilt titles. The text is in good condition. This is not an ex-library copy. There is no dust jacket. An owner’s book label is pasted on to the front end paper. The corners and edges of the boards show signs of wear.
