The history of five centuries of sail are described in this attractively illustrated book, the editor bringing together many of the world's leading authorities on sail. A number of the thirteen chapters are devoted to individual ships. The great days of sail are traced from the age of discovery to the clippers, on to the final years and the decline of the commercial fleets as steam gradually took over.

Profusely illustrated with photographs, plans, diagrams, reproductions, etc. 228 images altogether. 44 pages in four colors, 16 pages in two colours. Eight monographs of famous vessels, with 31 pages of plans. The large format makes the most of these images.

A very clean copy of the first in English, with jacket.
