The Jippi-Jappa Hat Merchant And His Family: A Jamaican Family in Britain

£39.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

Cyril Charles Henriques, with a French, Greek, Haitian and Jewish background, was a successful merchant in Kingston, exporting produce including 'jippi-jappa' hats. In 1919 he brought his family from Jamaica to live in Britain, to ensure his six children were well-educated. This fully-illustrated book, researched by his descendants, vividly illuminates his life and the lives of his children. Several of them became prominent in their chosen professions: Carryl, inventor of the phonostethograph; Cyril George, President of the Court of Appeal in Jamaica; Pauline, the first black woman magistrate in Britain; and Fernando, an eminent Sussex academic and writer on class and multi-racial studies.

Rare paperback book in very good condition; some shelf wear. Well-illustrated throughout.
