The Undone Years

£35.00

Product description

This book is principally a biographical dictionary of the 119 men of Magdalen College who lost their lives in the Allied armed forces or died as a result of enemy action between 1939 and 1947. Also included is the only German member of Magdalen known to have died in World War Two, and one fatality in the Vietnam War.

This book has two aims. First, to keep alive the memory of a generation of Magdalen students, old members, choristers, academic and non-academic staff, whose lives were overtaken by war. The experience of each of those who died is set within the context of the campaigns in which they fought and, with the aid of maps, can be followed by anyone without previous military knowledge. For some hardy men World War Two provided some opportunities they could not have equalled in peacetime, and they volunteered for extra-ordinary service. The stories are complemented by photographs of 93 of the men, and together offer an understanding of the experience of war from the perspective of the individuals.

Second, the book includes a Roll of Service to identify nearly all those Magdalen men who were caught up in the War. By showing the diversity of service rendered by the members of one small institution it acknowledges the debt owed to all World War Two veterans.
