The Viking Achievement

£6.99

Product description

Subtitled: The society and culture of early medieval Scandinavia.

This is an account of the Norsemen in the period A.D. 800 - 1200. To understand the Vikings, the society, technology, art and literature of these vital people, a vast amount of evidence of very different kinds has to be considered. Some of this evidence is literary, philological and archaeological; parts of this evidence only came to light in 1967 and 1968 excavations; some of it has been intensively studied and argued about in a host of languages for 200 years or more.

It is in fact, now practically impossible for a single scholar to give an authoritative description of the whole field, and this book has consequently been written by an archaeologist and a textual scholar in collaboration. This novel venture in interdisciplinary collaboration will, it is hoped, provide a better balanced and more accurate survey than any so far achieved.

The book is written primarily for the general reader but will also serve the needs of many university students. The text is illustrated with a number of drawings and photographs.

There is some shelf wear to the edges of the dust jacket. There is light tanning on the edges of the pages, otherwise the book is in very good condition.
