TheSilchar Track

Product description

Signed By Author...
The Silchar Track charts the operations and manoeuvres carried out by a Northamptonshire Regiment, the 48th, during one of the Burmese war campaigns in 1944. One of the most attractive things about the book is that it is entirely written by the soldiers who took part in the campaign. There are no historians sharing their scholarly viewpoints here; instead, every chapter is full of enthralling first-hand accounts from the men who witnessed the battle for themselves. Major Molloy has done an excellent job in collecting and collating all of the various accounts from the campaign, which range from diary extracts to letters. He has incorporated these diverse sources within a readable and easily digestible narrative that details the whole story.

By necessity, the prose is written in a tight, concise style, and is packed with abbreviations. On the negative side, the level of jargon and abbreviations within the text requires close concentration on the part of the reader, and may be off-putting to some. There is a possibility of missing some of the finer details if care is not taken. The book is handsomely presented in a sturdy hardback format, with an attractive cover design. The text contains a series of splendid full-colour maps illustrating the terrain and closes with a series of useful explanatory appendices. Refreshingly, The Silchar Track is entirely free of typographical errors.
