With Child: Birth Through the Ages

£9.99

Product description

The book is in very good condition, with only slight creasing to the top of the dust jacket on the spine. Otherwise, all pages and the cover are clean and intact. Includes many black and white photographs, sketches, and illustrations.

What was childbirth really like for women in the past? Why, after centuries of 'natural birth' do women want to return to it? The development of medical knowledge had played a key part in the modern western woman's attitude to and expectations of birth. few of the facilities we now take for granted were available to women even as recently as the beginning of this century. But the progress of the medical approach to birth has brought its own problems, and there are many who will argue that in the search for the 'ideal' pain-free birth too much has been sacrificed.
The last few decades have seen the publication of a considerable amount of material on the issues which affect childbirth. With Child presents an overall picture of these issues, drawing together strands from many centuries of history -- before modern birth technology, hospital deliveries and Caesarean section, before obstetricians and episiotomy -- showing how dramatic the change in birth has been and giving perspective to the issues we all face today.
