About this item

Original French version by French Canadian writer of novel which is known in English as The Brawl. Bessette was known as a novelist, poet and literary critic. He himself suffered from the stifling effect of censorship on writing and debate in Canada in the 1960's due to the immense influence of the Catholic Church. This was just prior to the greater separation of church and state powers in the "quiet revolution". The story tells of a Montreal left-wing student who is obliged to give up his course out of solidarity with his co-workers at the Montreal Transit Company. This fits in closely with his outlook on the role of the individual within the collective whole. [A few short passages, mostly remarks about the current society and undercurrents, are marked in the margin with a vertical pencil line.]

Oxfam Bookshop St Albans

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller, but it doesn't stop there. We sell a great range of donated music as well. Whether it's vintage LPs or the latest modern fiction you want, we're well worth a look! We also sell greetings cards for every occasion. And of course we have some great stock for sale on Oxfam's Online Shop, too. Call us to find out more.

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
