About this item

xxxiii/159pp. The cover is in excellent condition. There is a streak of black (marker pen?) on the bottom page edges. The jacket is unclipped. It is a little bumped on the edges, but there are no tears. Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811) was a master of German prose and dramatic literature. At 34, he consummated a suicide pact with an incurably ill married woman. Ironically, his death helped to rescue his work from oblivion. This play is aa tragedy of love in a world governed by the rules of war, as an army of Amazons sets out to conquer Greek heroes so as to stock their women's state with new female offspring. They blast into the midst of the Trojan War, forcing these enemies into a brief terrified alliance. The Amazon Queen hunts Achilles. the leader of the Greeks, and ths begins a tragedy of love in a world governed by the rules of law. This English translation is splendidly illustrated by Maurice Sendak, well known for his children's illustrations in "Where the Wild Things Are".

Oxfam Bookshop St Albans

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller, but it doesn't stop there. We sell a great range of donated music as well. Whether it's vintage LPs or the latest modern fiction you want, we're well worth a look! We also sell greetings cards for every occasion. And of course we have some great stock for sale on Oxfam's Online Shop, too. Call us to find out more.

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
