Byzantine Heroic Poetry / David Ricks

£29.99

Product description

Publication date: 1990. Condition: Very good. The cover is in very good condition with minimal discolouration and very slight edge wear. Internally, there is substantial foxing on the front and back end papers and the page edges, but the pages themselves seem unaffected: the book is clean, tight and unmarked. Content: "This new and challenging study fills an important gap in providing the first-ever English translations of the two surviving Byzantine epic poems: the escorial version of Digenes Akrites and the Armoures. In a radical new interpretation, the Digenes Akrites is divided into five parts, each introduced by a general outline of contents and examination of differences in style, sources and historical background. Both epics are presented in the original with translation and notes, and discussed as literary texts in their own right rather than from the rigid historical viewpoint of earlier critics......Byzantine Heroic Poetry will therefore be of interest to students of Byzantine history and culture and of heroic poetry generally."
