Ciris: A Poem Attributed to Vergil

£39.99

Product description

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1978, first edition, hardcover with d/w, pp xii + 332

The Ciris is a mythological narrative poem on the legend of Scylla and Nisus and is an outstanding example of the epyllion-genre – miniature epics, of which there must have been many from Catullus onwards. Dr Lyne’s introduction and commentary provide a complete account of the Ciris: its manuscripts, style and language, the poet’s treatment of the Scylla myth, his narrative technique and his method of composition. The thorough investigation of the language and content of the poem makes the book a useful work of reference for anyone seriously interested in Latin language and literature and has been indexed with this end in view. (Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries Series no. 20)

The book is in very good condition. Pages are very clean and unmarked except for a former owner’s name, date and place to FPEP and initials to top corner of FFEP. Binding tight. The d/w is in good+ condition – slight fading to spine and chipping and closed tears to the top of the spine with a tape mark (tape now removed) to the inside of the wrapper at the top of the spine.

Oxfam Books & Music Jesmond

We are a specialist shop nestled in the heart of Jesmond, a lovely residential area of Newcastle Upon Tyne. We opened in July 2010 and have on offer 5,000 books, 2,000 records, CDs and games as well as sheet music, cards and stationery within the shop. Our shop has high ceilings and a nice, bright and airy feel. We are gaining a very good reputation in the Rare and Collectable books and vinyl community, but also do a roaring trade in contemporary fiction and modern non-fiction. We also organise live music and book events and aim to be a hub of culture in this wonderfully tight-knit community.
