History and Poetry of the Scottish Border : Their Main Features and Relations - Two Volumes

£45.00

Product description

Published in 1893 by William Blackwood and Sons, New & Enlarged Edition.. John Veitch traces the outlines of Border History, in order of development, of its salient characteristics and shows how these in connection with the scenery of the district, have issued in its rich and stirring ballad and song.

John Veitch (1829 – 1894), Scottish poet, philosopher, and historian. He was assistant lecturer successively to Sir William Hamilton and Alexander Campbell Fraser (1856–60). In 1860 he was appointed to the chair of logic, metaphysics and rhetoric at St Andrews, and in 1864 to the corresponding chair at Glasgow. In philosophy an intuitionist, he dismissed the idealist arguments with some abruptness, and thereby lost much of the influence gained by the force of his personal character. He is remembered chiefly for his work on Border literature and antiquities.

Both volumes are in very good condition for their age; some bumps and slight wear. Pages are only slightly foxes with dusty page edges.
