Selected Poems of William Barnes - The Muses' Library

£14.99

Product description

Gold coloured dust jacket with green and maroon printing. Jacket is a little bit tatty with one small tear, with scuff marks to the rear and a blue mark to the front. Dark blue boards with gilt writing, it has splotchy marks around the bttom of the boards. There is a previous owners plate pasted onto the front board.

The fact that William Barnes wrote most of his poems in dialect has long concealed the charm and skill of one of the most accomplished writers of the nineteenth century. Coventry Patmore called him a classic; Gerard Manley Hopkins delighted in his lyrics and set some of them to music; Thomas Hardy knew him well, wrote a poem in his memory, was influenced by him in his own verse and edited what has been hitherto the best selection of his poems, long out of print.

Geoffrey Grigson has felt that in the Muses' Library Barnes would still be served better by a selection, chronologically ordered, than by a complete edition. But he has included new poems which have not been reprinted in earlier selections, or which were never collected by Barnes himself. Many of these he wrote in ordinary English, including his long poem "Orra" of which no copy according to the Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature had survived. In a long introduction Mr. Grigson presents William Barnes as one of the lesser masters of English verse.
