Statius Achilleid

£35.00

Product description

Large tear to the back of dust jacket. Internally in very good condition for age, with only minor signs of ageing. Binding strong.

Publius Papinius Statius (ca AD 50-95) is the epic poet of the Silver Age of Latin Literature. The son of a poet and schoolmaster, he was an ardent admirer of Virgil, and as such was respected by Dante, who thought him a Christian.

The Achilleid was to have been a long epic telling the whole life of Achilles, but only Book 1 and part of book 2 remain. Although its attractive content and style make it the best introduction to the Silver Age Epic, it has not previously been edited in English. The present edition gives the most complete apparatus criticus available anywhere, and notes on the content and language. The introduction treats of the life of Statius, the date, theme and sources of the Archilleid, its language and syntax; and Mr Dilke gives a full consideration of the MSS., which he collated at Eton and Paris and in German libraries.
