Theocritus. Vol.I: Introduction, Text and Translation; Vol.II: Commentary, Appendix, Indexes, and Plates.

£60.00 Out Of Stock

Product description

A two-volume second edition set of this important work, a text of Theocritus with a translation and extensive commentary. The text is preceded by an introduction dealing with the life of Theocritus and with the text of the poems; the commentary in Volume II is followed by an appendix, where more than 350 pamphlets and papers dealing with Theocritus are listed and their contents indexed. There are also full indexes, Greek and English, to the commentary. Fifteen plates are added, reproducing the more important pieces of archaeological evidence to which the Editor refers. The books are soundly bound, with blue cloth boards and gilt titles. Vol. I (257 pp) has colour fading to the top of the spine; Vol. II (638 pp) has slight bumping to spine ends; both books have some light waterstain spots on the blue-coloured upper text block edge but inside pages are not affected. A former owner's name is written in black ink at the top of the front free end papers. The soft-paper jackets have some light general surface marks and soiling and noticeable edge-wear; spines and flap folds are tanned. Price clipped. The jacket of Vol. I has closed tears to edges, two approx. 3.5 cm to the top edge, and two approx. 1.2 cm to the bottom. Chips with loss at the top of the spine; corners are worn and chipped; the rear flap is untrimmed. Vol. II has similar tears plus chips and loss to both spine ends, and worn and chipped corners; both flap edges are untrimmed.
