Writers of the Early Twentieth Century / J. I. M. Stewart (Michael Innes)

£12.99

Product description

Dust jacket in excellent condition. Hardback black cloth on board with gold lettering on spine. Pages very clean, unmarked and tightly bound. Looks as if the book has never been read with no creasing to spine. (This is a 1990 reprint of the 1963 original)

This book is intended for students of English literature at A-level and above; general readers interested in a complete history of literature from Middle English to the earlier twentieth century. "This volume opens with an introductory chapter outlining the general literary situation from about 1880 to the beginning of the Second World War. The remaining space is devoted to considering eight writers - none of them now living - who appear to be of unchallengeable importance in the period. They are Hardy, James, Shaw, Conrad, Kipling, Yeats, Joyce, and Lawrence. It would be rash to suggest that these will eventually prove to be the only great writers of their age. As the mists of near-contemporaraneity disperse, other peaks appear. But they should remain important landmarks when later literary historians come to a fuller survey of the terrain. Meanwhile, they afford a scale against which a good deal can be measured." (J. I. M. Stewart is the real name of the author Michael Innes).
