A Complete English-Latin and Latin-English Dictionary

£50.00

Product description

This is a very comprehensive dictionary compiled in the 1830's, and taken chiefly from the German. In his preface, the author notes that this work is not based on existing Latin-English dictionaries, which he considers to use imperfect plans, with Latin of doubtful quality and often decidedly bad. He has rather used good dictionaries of the English language and dictionaries in foreign languages such as French-Latin and German-Latin. He tells us that "English words expressive of ideas peculiar to modern times have received the best renderings which the author could either find or devise". In addition "barbarous or low Latin has been carefully excluded" except in some instances where a bad word looks like a good one or has received the sanction of existing Latin-English dictionaries.

This hard cover book is bound in yellow linen with red spine and corners. The spine is somewhat faded and the book shows general signs of wear, but interior pages, although small font, are clean and legible.
