This extraordinary book reveals the many aspects of the doll through the superb photography of H. Landshoff, and through the text and commentaries of Carl Fox, former director of museum shops for the Smithsonian Institution and the Brooklyn Museum, and a long time collector of dolls. The numerous full-page plates show dolls from many cultures and eras, including fashion models made for queens, fancifully dressed Victorian damsels, sophisticated French ladies, and sturdy cornhusk figures. The book appears to have been placed in a damp area at some point as the red cloth boards have darker red water-stains on the red covers at the opening ends, and the art paper pages have become slightly rippled. However, this does not detract from the cleanliness and brightness of the pages. The jacket has a little light handling wear and indentations on the glossy surface, also creasing along edges; small closed tear approx. 8mm to the top of the spine, and a similar closed tear to the rear lower left corner.
The Doll is a book to delight child and adult, collector and historian.
