A Separate God. The Christian Origins of Gnosticism

£21.99

Product description

London. Darton Longman and Todd. 1991. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good ++ . A closed 1in tear to the rear. Unclipped. Translated from the French by Carol Harrison. 8¾" up to 9¾" tall.

No marks internally except for a small area of sticker residue to the ffep where similar has been removed. At the rear endpaper is an owner's sticker which is complete.

Eminent French scholar Simone Petrement argues that rather than being a pre-Christian system of beliefs, Gnosticism emerged from within Christianity only to be later suppressed by the orthodox Church fathers as heresy. She discusses the principal Gnostic doctrines and argues that Gnosticism originated as a dualistic Interpretation of the theologies of Paul and John. It is the cross of Christ, which in the Gnostic interpretation separates God from the world, the Transcendent from the Creator, constituting what Petrement calls: A Separate God.
