A charming small volume, in a card case with the design of the book cover printed on the x lid.
Grover was an eminent publisher and literary man in the early part of the 20th century, appointed America's first 'Professor of Books'. He was also a leading figure in helping to improve interracial relations at that time. As is common with compilations such as this, the sayings range from Ancient Greece to 'modern' America, including Emerson and Whitman, with several from the compiler himself, modestly acknowledged as 'E.O.G.' The book is one of a series - 'The Volland Good Cheer Series of Gift Books'.
Delightful, miniscule page decorations and patterned end papers, in the same blue as the cover and box. There is tiny pencil writing inside the front cover, including the date 1916. The book itself is in excellent condition, with only very slight bumping to the bottom edge and minor general yellowing of the pages. The case shows more signs of wear, but has undoubtedly protected the volume itself.
A beautiful example of 'collected sayings' from almost a century ago. The case contains what is probably the original Christmas gift card dated Dec 10th 1921, bearing a charming Christmas design of the period, and cursive script.
