La Légende Dorée tome 1 - The Legend of Doree Volume 1

£8.99

Product description

The Golden Legend was the most widely read and widely circulated work in the Middle Ages, just after the Bible (there are 1000 preserved manuscripts, only 150 copies for the famous Grail Book). Moreover, the work must have its present title to its success, the golden slices being precisely reserved for the most important books of the time.
This "legend of the saints" (its original title), cut out in 178 chapters, is in fact an encyclopedia of Christian life - the term "legend" must be understood as "what must be read" (by preachers in schools Or during meals in the monasteries). Nevertheless, the marvelous is very present, according to the tradition of the Christian apocrypha, fond of fantastic and miraculous. Besides the lives of the saints (the sanctoral), the work attempts to explain the meaning of the great Christian festivals (the temporal).
