Product description

The book is a study of the structure of religious experience that is central in the poetry of Hopkins. Although everyone recognizes the importance of religion in Hiopkins' poetry, there is no full treatment of the topic, and this book seeks to remedy that. Some writers have tended toward sentimentality in interpreting this religious dimensions, others have seen it as a frustrating oppression, still others have been content with traditional categories such as mysticism. The present study seeks a more balanced view determined by the poetry itself. Of those writers who have also given a balanced view such as J. Hillis Miller, David Downes, and John Pick, none have integrated the poetic elements into the central motifs here depicted.
The central experience in question is identified as a three-stage experience of desolation and recovery. The first stage is called encagement, a term coined from "The Caged Skylark" indicating entrapment in life leading to emptiness and despair. The second stage is called naturation, a term derived nature as compared with grace and indicating those means of recovery open to natural human effort. The third stage is grace and indicates that sense of renewal attributed to divine initiative.
