The author - Wolfhart Pannenberg - is Emeritus Professor of Systematic Theology at The University of Munich. He is widely regarded as one of the foremost Christian theologians in the world today. The publication of this book completes the English edition of Pannenberg's masterly three-volume Systematic Theology - a work that will surely come to stand alone as one of the lasting theological statements of the twentieth century. The foreword speaks only of this third "band" which contains chapters 12, 13, 14 and 15 of the whole work - no information is given concerning the first two bands, chapters 1 to 11 inclusive and the subjects thereof. In this volume three Pannenbergh provides a systematic restatment of the Christian doctrines of the Holy Spirit, the church and the faith of the individual, sacraments and ministry, election and history, and the eschatological hope. At the heart of this volume lies the theme of the church; it not only comprises the largest chapter but is intimately related to each of the other dictrines - to the Spirit as an eschatological gift and to individual salvation as a sign of its future consummation. Throughout, Pannenberg brings to bear the vast historical and exegetical knowledge and keen philosophical argumentation for which he is well known." It is indeed a post-modern piece of german scholarship of the first water, completed in 1993, the translation into English completed in 1994 at the onset of the Yugoslavian Troubles and the closure of the Irish Troubles effected by the people rather than The Book, however ...
