The title page of The New Cathedral Psalter with Chants states that it contains the Psalms of David with the Canticles and Proper Psalms edited and pointed for chanting. We are told in the preface that the collection is based mainly on the St. Paul's Cathedral Chant Book, published in 1878 . The date of this volume is unclear, but it is numbered 73 and has a signature from the previous owner, 'To Hazel Cloke, St Luke's Southampton 1953.'
The boards are covered in red cloth, with an embossed full title and volume number on the front and spine. Additionally, the front has rectangular borders, rows of decorative stars and a Sun and stars pattern in the centre. The back board is plain. All corners have small bumps, the head & tail caps are slightly worn/creased and the board edges have a little shelf wear.
The end pages have been printed black (they are not cut from black paper), while the back of the inner front page has the above signature, ' To Hazel . . . ' Next, is a title page and a preface. Apart from the signature, the entire front matter section is secure and clean - as is the smaller end matter section. All of the page edges are slightly light faded, but the faces are very clean. There are no dog-ears, foxing or annotations. The binding is tight and the pages feel crisp.
