The Pope and The Council

£39.99

Product description

Written under the pseudonym Janus in the months leading up to the convening of the First Vatican Council in December of 1869, this work sharply critiques the notion of papal infallibility, which the Council declared the following year. Von Döllinger, the primary author of this work, was considered a great ecclesiastical scholar, holding a teaching post at the University of Munich. This is the second edition of the authorised translation from the German. The book has dark brown boards and gilt titles and has general wear marks to the cover. Corners and spine ends are bumped and worn with surface loss and there is a surface tear, approx. 1cm, to the top left corner of the spine. The front cover curves inwards slightly. Text block edges have dark brown foxing and there are foxing spots evident on front and rear leaves. Slight breaks to front and rear end papers but the binding is sound. A former owner's name and address is written in black ink, dated 1869, on the rear of the front free end paper, and another name with the date 1918 is written at the top of the title page.
