KathleenAnne Steward was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1969. She is a 1986 graduate of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, and a 1990 magna cum laude graduate in History and Science of Harvard University. In the summer of 1989, Stewart received a grant for undergraduate research from the Ford Foundation to complete the background study for this book at the Borthwick Institute of Historical Research in York, England. Currently, she is a second-year medical student at Vanderbilt University where she continues hes interest in medical ethics and the history of science. In 1991, she had a summer intership with Dr William H. First, Surgical Director of the Vanderbilt Transplant Center and Director of the Vanderbilt Heart and Lung Transplant Program. Stewart's avocational interests include crew, running, music, and literary works written by or about physicians.
