Familiar Wild Flowers

£75.00

Product description

A three book set, containing one to five of the wild flower series compiled by Frederick Edward Hulme, who not only gives a detailed description of each flower but also its herbal and medicinal uses and habitat. The first book has the first and second series, the second book has series three and four, and the third book contains series five. The books are not dated but have an owner's pencil signature dated Oct 1897 on the front free end paper. Each book is bound in red textured cloth with soft light brown leather on corners and down the spine (therefor half leather bound); the covers have general light soiling and handling marks. Titles are gilt in red labels on the spines, which have five raised bands. Block edges are marbled. Each series has 160 pages and colour plates accompany the flower descriptions. The books have substantial wear to the leather areas which give off a light brown dust when rubbed. Spine ends and corners are worn with surface loss. The second book has a split approx. 4.7 cm to the lower left of the spine; book three has a split approx. 7 cm to the upper right of the spine, which is frayed. The bindings are secure but have the beginnings of splits in several places. Foxing has affected several front and rear leaves, but only occasionally appears on inside pages, which have very lightly tanned upper edges. Colour plates are bright and most attractive. The set is heavy, requiring courier delivery.
