£12.99

Product description

Cambridge University Press. 1957. Drawn by Roles, Sybil J. DJ Condition: very good. Condition: very good. Signs of wear on all edges of DJ, especially the spine. Slight marks on DJ. Browning on back of DJ. No inscriptions. Pages and spine still in excellent condition. Contains many black and white illustrations.

"A common volume to the text by A. R. Clapham, T.G. Tutin and E. F. Warburg. Drawings by Sybil J. Roles.

This is the first volume of illustrations to the Clapham-Tutin-Warburg Flora, which is now the standard work. The drawings are meant to assist users of the Flora to recognize species by supplying a visual supplement to the text.

The arrangement of species follows the order in the Flora. Some species not mentioned in it are illustrated because they have been recently recognized or are newcomers now well established. Where two species (e.g. Tamarix) are practically indistinguishable in general appearance only one has been illustrated, and reference to the text will show the ways in which the other differs. Also omitted are a few aliens which have proved to be so uncommon that no fresh specimens have been forthcoming. Nomenclature follows the Flora in general, but a few changes are signalized.

The drawings are from fresh specimens and deliberately aim to give an impression of the living plant.

It is expected that the illustrations to the Flora will eventually be in four volumes." - inside DJ cover
