In the Nicobar Islands

£29.99

Product description

Published in 1924, this is an early anthropological study which may remind one of the works of Margaret Mead . It is very much of its time, the preface refers to "fuller knowledge will give fuller sympathy with one's brother, though he be a dark-skinned barbarian of the shores of Eastern Seas". However it is very informative and not as patronizing as the quote might suggest. Bound in yellow cloth with a vignette in black of a Nicobar hut on stilts. The cover is somewhat soiled but remains bright, text block edges also are age soiled, but all text is clear and there are 20 b/w photographic illustrated plates which remain clear and crisp. After the appendices and comprehensive index are 12 pages of travel book advertisements (Seeley's New Travel Books 1924), some of which are illustrated with charming b/w line drawings.
