Insects of Surinam

£180.00

Product description

An unmarked first edition copy of this folio sized, beautifully illustrated trilingual edition. Pioneering female botanist and artist Merian (1647-1717) was in her fifties when she and her younger daughter took ship to South America and journeyed up the Suriname river deep into the rainforest, recording the exotic insects and plants they encountered.

Illustrated boards unmarked, small dent to back. Yellow cloth spine slightly faded. No dustwrapper, as issued. Internally unmarked, as new. 192 pp; 60 colour plates with trilingual captions, over 20 full-page colour detail plates and 21 smaller illus. Introductory essay by Katharina Schmidt-Loske in English, German and French.

At a time when few women were educated or literate - and rarely travelled - German-born naturalist and artist Maria Sibylla Merian made history with her studies of insects in Surinam. With its detailed text and imagery, 'Insects of Surinam' is the first work on the natural history of Surinam.
