This book is written for engineers and designers who are not corrosion specialists but who have to deal with corrosion problems as part of their professional activities. Treatment of the subject is broad and practical rather than specialised with the primary intention that the book should be useful. Subjects such as cathodic protection and materials selection, which too easily become highly esoteric, are presented with concern for their practical application. Maintenance also finds a prominent place, as do the economics of corrosion, for total prevention of corrosion is a costly ideal which is of little practical concern. Control of corrosion within the finite lives of ships, structures and engineering plant is the aim of the engineer and it is for him that this book is written.
