SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, FIRST EDITION. Blue cloth cover in very good condition, the two front corners are lightly bumped. Gilt titles on the spine. The price clipped dust jacket is also in very good condition, just slightly creased at the ends of the spine and a little bent along the top front. The front cover illustration is of ice floes and mountains with three penguins posing on one of the ice floes. There are maps of Antarctica on the end papers and various maps and photographs illustrate the book, some in colour but the majority in black and white. The author's signature on the title page is dated 1983. The book was published in 1982 by Anthony Nelson.
This book describes the early struggles, the tragedies and successes of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey - later the British Antarctic Survey - over its first thirty years. Sir Vivian Fuchs (the author) was Field Commander of six small Antarctic stations during 1948-50 and returned home to become Director of the Survey unitl 1973.
