The Language of Mathematics

£19.99

Product description

"Mathematics is a language - but to many of us it is a foreign language of which we have only a smattering left over from school days. Yet today, even more than in the past, mathematics is so much a part of the fabric of life that to have little or no understanding of it is a serious intellectual handicap.

It is to give such understanding that this book has been written. It is intended for readers who have very little prior knowledge and no special mathematical ability but who are prepared to make some effort to break through into a new and unfamiliar world of ideas.

Indeed, one of the main themes of this book is that mathematics is not merely a useful tool for the scientist and researcher - it is a pursuit which can be intensely rewarding in itself. The author is thus concerned to show how interesting the development of mathematical ideas and relationships can be; but he also demonstrates how everyday topics are illuminated and defined when thought about in mathematical terms.

The book begins with an elementary exploration of our numbers and how they evolved, our notation and the reasons behind our conventional ways of carrying out ordinary calculations, and it then considers our units and their extended use as compound units such as miles-per-hour or man-hours. Further chapters deal with space and elementary geometry, algebra and statistics. The reader is introduced through simple number series to logarithms and parabolas, to shapes of the shells of marine animals and number patterns to be found in flowers. The shape of the giant reflector of Jodrell Bank radio telescope, the orbits of artificial satellites, the distribution of intelligence and the validity of statistics are among the subjects discussed.

The book has been designed by Will Carter, and there are nearly 300 diagrams by Margaret Clarke."

Book pages are in very good condition and apparently unmarked.
Book cover has some wear at exposed top and bottom edges.
There is a small ink inscription on the inside front page.
Dust jacket is intact with price but has some small tears.
