In the year 1997 'angels' appear at hold places round the world, summoning humanity to 'come to God's World' - which they identify as a planet of the star 82 Eridani, twenty light years from Earth. A mysterious space-drive materialises in the Gobi desert, and round it scientists construct a spaceship, Pilgrim Crusader. In this a carefully picked team of scientist and humanists heads for outer space. For Amy Dove, a sociologist, her lover Peter and the other members of the expedition, the 'High space' they travel through proves to be a dimension of distortions and hallucinations. Their ship is captured by insect-like creatures, the Group-ones: Amy and five others escape to the planet, 'God's World', to find an alien civilisation which exists partly in everyday reality and partly in 'Heaven', into which they are gradually initiated. Through dream contacts, Amy becomes aware that the Group-ones may not be the enemy they seem, and that the 'Heaven' of God's World masks an awful threat.
