FIRST EDITION: Red cloth cover with gilt titles on the spine, in very good condition, no bumping or marks. The dust jacket is also in very good condition with some slight signs of rubbing and wear, there is some bending along the upper edge of the front, the spine is faded. The dust jacket is not price clipped. There are fifteen illustrations within this book including the frontispiece which covers two pages. Internally the book is clean, bright and tightly bound. This book was first published in 1992. The book is part 9 of J R R Tolkien's The History of Middle-Earth, but it is subtitled The End of the Third Age, The History of the Lord of the Rings Part Four. The series is edited by Christopher Tolkien.

In the first part of this book, the author completes his account of the writing of "The Lord of the Rings" - beginning with Sam's rescue of Frodo and giving a different account of the Scouring of the Shire. The second part is an edition of "The Notion Club Papers" written by J.R.R. Tolkien.
